Brandon Reads 2022- Week 3 Discussion

“It was Jane’s fault that Jimmy no longer had his mother. It was all Jane’s fault—can’t you see that?” Do you agree? Why did Jane take care of Jimmy? Why did he become, in Jane’s words, “my Jimmy”?

  1. I agree with both comments. Accidents happen and Jane was feeling guilty. Jane wanted to be left alone for a bit. She was changing her mind about getting married and felt bad about that. Then after sending her mother to drive Jimmy’s mom home – that topped off her guilty feelings. Taking care of Jimmy was all about trying to right a wrong. Not that they were taking the best care of Jimmy – but she did try her best in her way to take care of him.

    • Your sentence “Taking Care of Jimmy was all about trying to right a wrong” sums up how I felt through the rest of the book!

  2. *SPOILER*
I agree with Janet. Accidents happen. It was not Jane’s fault that Jimmy no longer had a mother. If anyone felt obligated to take care of Jimmy, it should have been Jane’s mother. She was the one driving the car that was involved in the car accident. Jane had a very good reason to ask her mother to drive Jimmy’s mother home. Jane was getting ready for her wedding. Jane was a much more nurturing person than her mother and felt bad that Jimmy needed help. Can you imagine this happening in real life.

    • I totally can see this happening in real life! We humans are so hard to understand! Jane had the empathy to feel for Jimmy, but her mother did not. I see Jane’s mother trying to go though the actions at the behest of Jane, but no effort beyond that.

  3. *spoiler*. Accidents happen and it is human nature to blame, even if it is self blame. Jimmy needed nurturing and Jane was there for him.

    • Guilt and blame are some of the hardest emotions to deal with, even when trying to identify with them. I absolutely agree that Jane really did show up for Jimmy, even with such powerful emotions at play.
