What were your first impressions of the title? Did you know the Chevy in the Hole was a real place in Flint?

  1. I had no idea it was a physical location! It’s amazing how little we often know about places near to us.

  2. I had no idea what the title meant and just remembered that my cousin named his 4-H goats Chevy and Ford because he loved cars. Now with my dad being a hardcore Ford guy, I told him I was reading this book a lot just to pick on him. Having lived in Grand Blanc for 5 years, it was cool to find out that it was a place in Flint and learn a bit of the history behind it.

I’m getting a bit confused by the different perspectives being told by the four main characters.

  3. I had no clue that Chevy in the Hole was a place. So, I had no idea what to expect in the book. I thought at first it was a non-fiction account of the downfall of Flint with the closing of the plant. I’m glad to hear it has a positive slant. I’m just beginning to read but have found the story line does make me want to continue reading.

  4. I am a GMI (now Kettering University) grad, so I’m very familiar with Chevy in the Hole. I am excited to read about Flint’s past and it’s future.

It is a bit sad to me to see the loss of jobs in Flint, but I think it great that site of the fomer plant will become something nice that can be used by many.

  5. I didn’t give much thought to the title of the book – other than why it was called “Chevy in the Hole”. I do not know much about Flint; therefore, I did not know that Chevy in the Hole was a real place. I have since done some googling about it. What I found is as follows:

It is better known as the site of a former Chevrolet factory called Chevrolet Flint Manufacturing but widely known as “Chevy in the Hole”. Automotive manufacturing at the factory began in 1904, and it employed 14,000 workers at its zenith.

The site is known as Chevy in the Hole because it is literally located in a depression along the Flint River

GM started to close plants at Chevy in the Hole in the mid 1990’s and the last building was demolished in 2004

What I think is exciting for the State of Michigan is a new park will span 230 acres, including existing trails and park units along the Flint River. One of the parks is Chevy Commons, which once was a GM plant nicknamed “Chevy in the Hole.” The park will be the 104th state park for Michigan and the first for Genesee County. The last county in Michigan to have a state park.
