Oral History

Preserve your family’s history for generations to come with our oral history recording service. We will conduct short, specific topic interviews with your loved ones, capturing their unique life stories, memories, and perspectives. We use state-of-the-art equipment and techniques to ensure high-quality audio recordings that will stand the test of time. The equipment making this endeavor possible was purchased with funds provided by the American Rescue Plan: Humanities Grants for Libraries is an initiative of the American Library Association (ALA) made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

Whether you are interested in a video oral history or an audio one, consider donating your story to the Ortonville Community Historical Society to keep these memories alive for generations to come.

How it Works

  • We schedule a quiet space in the library.
  • We provide either a video or audio oral history, whatever your preference.
  • This is a 30-minute recording. It’s best to have a focused topic for this interview. If we need more time we can assess our equipment (batteries) and time to either keep recording or schedule another visit.
  • Once it is recorded we move the file to a flash drive and you get to take it home! Please bring a 32GB or 64GB USB flash drive to take your file home. If you don’t have one we can keep the file until a flash drive is available. We can put it in the cloud for you as well.
  • We do not require any forms to be filled out, but we will provide you with some documents to help you keep your family records organized.
